課程概述 |
Community-Engaged Research (CEnR) is a collaborative process involving university- and community-based researchers that creates and disseminates knowledge and creative works. CEnR is an approach to research that identifies and incorporates the assets of all stakeholders in the design and implementation o the different phases of the research process. CEnR aims to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from their involvement. This 3 credit-hour, graduate-level course provides students with experiences and tools to explore the philosophy and techniques of CEnR. Like CEnR, the course seeks to promote powerful engagement in learning and research through openness and collaborative curiosity. The course culminates in students developing and submitting a manuscript on CEnR in Taiwan for an issue of Metropolitan Universities journal. |
課程目標 |
1. What is community-engaged research (CEnR)?
2. How do we understand CEnR as a research perspective rather than as a specific method or technique?
3. How do we build and maintain collaborative research partnerships involving stakeholders within and beyond the university?
4. How do we design and implement CEnR?
5. How do we ensure that CEnR is mutually beneficial for all stakeholders?
6. How can we disseminate and translate research findings in ways that are accessible to a diverse audience?
COURSE COMPETENCIES
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Describe CEnR as a research perspective that is associated with certain research methods.
2. Apply the CEnR perspective to designing their own research.
3. Describe strategies that sustain mutually-beneficial research partnerships.
4. Employ various approaches to identify and collaborate with partners and creatively disseminate CEnR findings and products.
5. Develop an article for publication on a CEnR project.

課程要求 |
We will use three main learning activities for this course. Throughout the course, you will:
1. Develop a journal article manuscript on community-engaged research in Taiwan
2. Write critical reflections
3. Develop digital communication skills through creative makes.
Assignment: Journal manuscript
The primary assignment for the course is the co-creation of an issue of Metropolitan Universities journal (MUJ) on community-engaged research across Taiwan. First, students will identify exemplars of community-engaged research efforts across Taiwan. Working individually and in groups, students will interview researchers and their collaborators (including faculty researchers and community members) and develop case studies for publication. In addition, the students will learn and experience the complete publication cycle - from the develop of the issue, the submission process, serving as a reviewer, and working with a copy-editor.
The case studies should provide a critical, evidence-based reflection on community-engaged research. Lessons learned and candid discussion of risk, benefits, pitfalls and effective strategies should be described, including factors that will be important to any effort to replicate the research or strategy in another setting. The case studies should be prepared in accordance with the MUJ Editorial Guidelines as found on the website www.cumuonline.org. Articles should be 10 to 12 pages, inclusive of references. This issue will be tentatively scheduled to appear in Fall 2018.
Metropolitan Universities journal
Metropolitan Universities journal (MUJ) is the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan University’s (CUMU) quarterly online journal for scholarship on cutting-edge topics impacting urban and metropolitan colleges and universities. It is a peer-reviewed, open access publication. Its readership includes senior leaders and administrators who shape higher education, scholars, faculty, and students who work to address issues facing modern universities and the communities they serve. Authors are top scholars and administrators who present compelling research and incisive reports about applications of theory and best practices from diverse institutional perspectives.
Assignment: Critical Reflections
These writing assignments integrate readings and other course materials and encourage critical thinking.
Assignment: Creative Makes
These are short assignments, requiring approximately fifteen minutes to complete, and challenge students to describe a core CEnR concept (e.g. community, partnership) through original or properly cited images, music, videos and other forms of art, and a brief narrative. These will be due approximately every two weeks.
